"The challenge presented by the new level of dynamic complexity in the metropolitan life is equal to the development of new powerful digital design tools" (1). Tools that can be used to develop complex spatial systems that in turn could serve to organize and articulate the new social complexities of our era.
Interactive media joins with a variety of fields(mainly architecture, science and art) to create spatial immersive environments, where interconnected networks ,systematic planning, analog devices ,engineering, mechanical rigs , sound and video amongst others are used as tools to capture, captivate, ellucidate the imagination and experience of the person in a created environment.
This transdiciplinady extremely hybrid field explores a whole range of topics, from space mathematics, quantum physics relation to experience, psychology of the technological body, new digitalized spatialization, amongst many other possible inventions. A common denominator for all of them is that they become manifested in environments that respond to the person, rather than being purely generative where the user has no effect on the environment. In the responsive environment "A persons intentions and actions can affect change, People are in extriably part of influencing the environment by their presence and interventions- "(2). In the making of responsive environments interdisciplinary fields can meet and move together to unexplored grounds where body, space and time communication and interaction are the intrinsic points of departure. This is why the importance of systematic thinking is crucial for the designer, since he has to be able to merge between fields in a comprehensive way in order to understand all the cultural implications and responsibilities there are when he creates a responsive environment; and also to make sure the environment functions and works in a systematic, open and "alive" way that allows for communication and adaptability. These spaces become places where the person has incredible experiences of interaction and communication with the complex structures, systems and concepts that compose the specific responsive environment.
The abounding presence of technology allows for these interaction devices to be readily at hand thus becoming objects of cultural exploration and experimentation permitting their use in creative and intelligent ways that can facilitate human- computer interaction and systematic integration. Our public environments that where once the place of gathering and community have become deserted because they can no longer hold individuals that are constantly looking after knowledge, entertainment or information; individuals that are just in transit. The infrastructure of the city does no longer reflect our minds and times- Responsive architecture environments would be able to bring the current technology to the public spaces in highly creative and interactive ways that promote activity, context awareness and attract the attention and participation of the community. These public environments can provide useful information, and a proficient use of time to create opportunities for social interaction.
Although responsive environments has been a subject of exploration since the late 1960's it has never had so much popularity as it has today, we have seen a substantial emergence of many infrastructures, interactive spaces and installations that deal with human responsive systems, and more researchers, artist, architects and intellectuals are starting to see the incredible possibilities of the responsive environments and the solutions they can bring to the contemporary complexities and challenges facing human life.
The interaction environment usually is set up in forms where the audience is directly participating in the interaction with intention, but it also could be that just the presence of the person is enough, or the interaction might not even depend on the presence of the person but on the environment itself. When persons experience a captivating responsive environment their notions of speed and time become rearanged because of the different type of space the user is inhabitting, as space and the way we experience the spatial environment changes also our movement through it and our sensations of time changes. We still haven't grasped the full potentials of the responsive environments; since it still is in its starting stages, but in the future we will definitely hear more about this transdiciplinary field. That is why I made this wiki with the intentions that other people might add more information or make newer connections to expand our field of knowledge.
